The Member of Parliament for Shipley, has today strongly advocated for addressing road safety concerns in her constituency during a debate in the House of Commons.

Ms Dixon made her support for this issue clear after 183 reported injuries and one fatality were caused by road traffic accidents in Shipley in 2023.

The Labour MP expressed her strong support for the Vision Zero initiative, a collaborative campaign involving the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, local councils, West Yorkshire Police, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, National Highways, and the road safety organization Brake.

This initiative aims to eliminate road traffic accidents in West Yorkshire by 2040.

Dixon also shared a personal connection to the issue, revealing that her grandfather had lost his life in a road traffic accident.

Speaking in Parliament to Andy MacNae, the MP for Rossendale and Darwen, Anna Dixon said: “West Yorkshire has a vision zero partnership that seeks to eliminate all traffic fatalities and injuries by 2040.

“It brings together the combined authority with local authorities, emergency services and National Highways, as well as victim support and road safety campaigners—speaking to his point about community.

“It is personal to me, as I lost my grandfather in a road traffic accident before I was even born, and my grandmother was left with disability. Shipley experienced 183 road casualties in 2023, one of which was fatal.

“Is there still a place—I suggest that there is—for these vision zero partnerships, alongside the community approach that he is advocating?”

In response, MacNae said: “I agree fully with my hon. Friend, and there is no conflict between a vision zero approach and the community-led approach I am talking about.”

Addressing concerns about road safety has been a long-standing priority for Anna Dixon. In early 2024, prior to her election to Parliament, she campaigned vigorously alongside Councillor Marcus Dearden and West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin to tackle speeding issues in Bingley.
