Anna Dixon MP at Crossflatts Cricket Club

Anna Dixon MP for Shipley, has today contacted every local sports club in her constituency, urging them to apply for new government funding aimed at revamping grassroots sports facilities.

In her correspondence to the over 30 sports clubs in the Shipley constituency, the Member of Parliament praised the work local clubs do “bringing communities together”, and encouraged them not to miss the chance to benefit from the £100 million of new grassroots funding announced by the new Labour Government last month.

The significant investment package forms part of the Government's Plan for Change, and aims to support new and upgraded pitches, changing rooms and clubhouses across the country, providing transformational funding to communities across the UK.

The funding comes through the Government’s Multi-Sport Grassroots Facilities Programme and is amplified by significant contributions from The FA and the Premier League in England.

The government says that at least 40% of funded projects will offer a multi-sport option, allowing more people to participate in sports other than football. This means more people will be able to access a wider variety of sports and activities that appeal to them, including rugby, cricket, and basketball.

In her letters to the sports clubs throughout the Shipley constituency, Anna Dixon MP said: “I am a passionate supporter of grassroots sports and recognise the vital role that local clubs play in our communities across all parts of the Shipley constituency.

“Organisations like yours do incredible work by bringing communities together and providing people of all ages and abilities with opportunities to develop essential skills and connections. This effort also fosters a sense of purpose and pride in our local areas.

Shipley constituency is brimming with sporting talent being home to the first mixed ability contact rugby union team in England, having already produced a national title-winning junior football team this year and seen a player brought up at one of our local cricket clubs named as the captain of the England limited-overs sides.

“And we now have the opportunity to give that talent an even greater chance to thrive with improved facilities.”
