Anna Dixon MP for Shipley constituency, has pledged to put her support behind a new Parliamentary bill aimed at cracking down on the anti-social use of fireworks in Bradford and across the UK.

The Member of Parliament endorsed the Fireworks Bill at a Westminster event with its sponsor, Sarah Owen, Labour MP for Luton North, after receiving considerable levels of correspondence from constituents in Shipley about the impact of the anti-social use of fireworks on their lives.

If the bill were to pass, it would reduce the legal decibel limit of a firework to 90, therefore banning the sale of the loudest classifications of the pyrotechnics.

The current limit for commercial fireworks is 120 decibels, similar to the noise level of a rock concert.

Since her election to Parliament in July, Anna Dixon has been proactive on this issue. In October, she wrote to the Home Secretary advocating for measures similar to those in the Fireworks Bill.

Ms Dixon also encouraged the new Labour government to carry out a comprehensive review of the existing regulations around fireworks, which have not been updated since 2004, in a Westminster Hall debate on the subject last week.

Speaking on the Fireworks Bill, Anna Dixon said: “Changes to the laws regarding the anti-social use of fireworks are long overdue.

“The law clearly states that fireworks should not disturb the peace after 11 PM. However, it is evident that some individuals are ignoring this regulation.

“The previous Conservative government had 14 years to address this escalating issue but did nothing. Meanwhile, the residents of the Shipley constituency have had to endure sleepless nights, distressed pets, and more.

“I have received dozens of emails and letters from my constituents expressing how this issue has impacted their lives, which is why I am eager to see the Fireworks Bill passed.”

The Fireworks Bill passed its First Reading in the House of Commons in October and will come back for its Second Reading in January.
